The goal of this article is to give a practical overview of the three image file formats JPEG, PNG, and SVG, mainly to enable you to decide which format is preferable for a given image. The application examples are focused on webcomics.
Advice in this article is about online publication of images. For your own archives you should keep images in a format which preserves as much information as possible, in case you need to edit them again later. In case of doubt keep them in the native format of…

Duty calls—just when he was about to eat. As predicted by Murphy.
A new Unusual Murders update. The page isn’t complete yet, so this is another partial update. Speech balloons and the last panel will be added.

tragicomics are back and a lot more predictable. Since I have no internet connection at home and can only occasionally go online to upload new strips, I’m now working with a buffer of pre-dated strips. Regular updates are Wednesdays, UTC 15:00. On the front page it is always announced how much time there is left until the next strip becomes available.
Other novelties are the use of resolution free Scalable Vector…

Apparently one of the
Ohost servers had technichal difficulties. They say it was fixed, but they have reverted to a backup, so my recent updates are not online anymore. I was not prepared to re-issue them. For now I have only been able to bring
Just Thinking... up to date again. At home I have no internet connection currently, and I did not take all my data with…

Chapter 3, page 8 of The Acid Murderer is complete now. In the last frame the number plate of Steiner’s car is visible. Here is the bottom third of the page:
I didn’t have internet access when I made up the license number. I would have like

I’m still alive, and for this week I’m also back online. I’m visiting family in Neumünster to leech bandwidth, but at home I won’t have internet for more than a while. So I still can’t provide regular comic updates. In the mean time I’m developing some new PHP code for my website.

Check out the archives of tragicomics. Also use “view page source” from your browser menu. You’ll see that the archives list is sent as XML and transformed to HTML by your browser using XSLT. This technology has been available in browsers for a long time, but for some reasons it never became widely used. I’ve wanted to do something with client-side XSLT for years now. Search the web, if you’d like to learn more

The middle row of page 8 of chapter 3 of The Acid Murderer is online now. I’m working really slow now, but every week I do at least one of the following: Lay out the panel configuration for a page, or roughly sketch, draw, refine, ink, scan and process, or upload one third of a page. So there will be another update in six weeks or less. Wh

This was long overdue. I’ve finished the About page for tragicomics which I’ve been working at for some time now. Maybe you’ll find the last three sections; About the Hosting, About the Technology, and About Comic Lettering Fonts; interesting. In About the Author I’ve set a link to Webcomics Inc, specifically to my profile here at Webcomics Inc.
For your convenience the content of the about-page is reproduced below

What is Union of Heroes?
Union of Heroes is a photo webcomic about superheroes. What is so great about Union of Heroes? One thing which makes Union of Heroes stand out are the facial expressions. I’m reminded now of the first page of the superheroes persiflage Everyday Heroes. When Mister Mighty talks about the trials he had to face as a her

The first third of page 8
is online. More Atano exteriors, and we get to actually see Steiner’s car. That’s about all the whole page will be about.

This is how the balloons look now.

The finished page was first rendered at 150% its final size and then scaled down, so this looks a bit smoother than the unfinished stages of this page which I’ve put up previously. Batik apparently doesn’t resample raster im…

Little Status Report on Unusual Murders
I’ve got the text layed out for chapter 3 page 7. I’ll draw the speech balloons as SVG paths. I still think that vector graphic strokes are too clean, too flawless for this comic. They don’t fit Atano. But I’ve been experimenti…

I’ve updated chapter 3, page 7 of
The Acid Murderer with the final image, which is an overlay over the third panel. This is a transition to the next scene. It’s what would be a DISSOLVE TO: in a movie. I’ve used the same kind of transition at page 2 of chapter 2.
Here is the makin…

And here it is after inking, but before erasing the pencil lines. I haven’t scanned the image again after erasing. I’m going to put this together with the rest of the page in the next week. The page will be finished then, except for the speech balloons. I’m not sure how to draw the balloons. I could make vector graphic speech balloons like I do in…

Here are some more car sketches I made while in Hamburg. The shape is the same. I’m still experimenting with proportions. I won’t only need a design, but also a way to reproduce its proportions reliably. It makes a whole different car if I can’t do that. Okay, I guess the characters also look quite variable throughout the story, but I’m trying to get better.…

I've translated another page of
The Acid Murderer, and the hitherto last page hasn't been lettered yet anyway, so I've put that one up too. Now the English translation proceeds as far as the original does. Further updates will be done synchronously in both languages, but I can't really tell…
