So thanks to an awesome hookup from my job me and the hubby visited the 5D conference this last weekend over at Cal State Long Beach. It's the first year they've done this and it was AMAZING! It was a small conference focusing on design, architecture and animation. The best was watching the panel with Gore Verbinski the director of the Pirates trilogy...and granted the last Pirates movie sucked goats, but the performance of Davy Jones in the second movie blew me away! And I found out why, because Gore is AWESOME and he truly knows that animation is an art and you need to have the animation be inspired by the actors performance. Not just purely motion capture (in which you get the Beowulf fiasco). I could go on about this for days but in a nutshell he really said some great stuff and I really agreed with his views. Great movies are a balance of good story, good characters, good effects etc. etc.

Then we moved onto the workshop with the Disney Imagineers! Sounds exciting right? Well...once both people to either side of us fell asleep we left to get lunch. No videos, no robots, nothing...just 5 imagineers sitting in the front of the room looking at us talking about themes and interactivity...it was a bit disappointing. I thought we were going to see the newest breakthroughs in technology for Disney but instead they seem to be just using what they already have and repackaging it with their newest characters. Anywho...

The last workshop was the character workshop with Dreamworks. They focused on the art from Kung Fu Panda and it was very inspiring!! I should rent that movie..hmm.. Also they gave us a look at their upcoming movie Monsters vs Aliens which looks really funny!! But sadly the character designs lost something in the translation to 3D. The sketches for the designs were great! And supposedly the designs are inspired by caricature but you really can't tell once they get to 3D...but it still looks really funny!

Anyway, If any of this was interesting to you I highly recommend looking into the 5D conference next year if they have it! It's like a laid back Siggraph.

Yes 5D was fun, and the WDI panel was a huge let down.
